Happy Fall, guys! ? ? ? It’s finally starting to feel like Fall over here and it’s starting to feel really nice. As cute as fall fashion and pumpkin patches are, there is one downside to the colder weather—the common cold! Gross. When I was on my way back to Michigan from LA, everyone and their mother was coughing throughout the entire trip and I was so worried I was going to catch something so I immediately made soup and took some Airborne when I got back.
As soon as I can tell my immune system is down, I go through a lot of different home “remedies” to get myself feeling back to normal:
- Make homemade chicken noodle soup
The first thing I do is make my Mom’s chicken noodle soup. The bone broth, garlic, and vegetables are so good for you and bone broth is known to help boost your immune system.
Here’s my Mom’s recipe if you want to make your own! I added alternatives because I switch it up sometimes
– 3 large carrots
– 4 celery stalks
– 1 large onion
– 3 cloves garlic minced
– 1 pkg bone broth
– 1 pkg chicken broth
– chicken base
– rotisserie chicken cut up
– frozen spinach (or green onion)
– soup noodles of your choice (sometimes I buy really long noodles and eat with chopsticks just because it’s fun! ?)
– 2 eggs
Cut up the carrots, celery, garlic, and onion and saute in one large pot until softened. Add the packages of chicken and bone broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and add a spoonful of chicken base (add more to your liking). Add noodles and stir until cooked. Add cut up chicken and green onion or spinach. Add water if the noodles soak up too much of the broth. Scramble the 2 eggs in a small bowl. While stirring the soup, slowly pour in the eggs. That’s it! It’s so easy and lasts me quite a few days after! - Bone Broth
Like I said, bone broth is SO good for you when you’re not feeling well. This might not be for everyone but sometimes I will pour some into a mug and heat it up. I’ll just sip on it like it’s tea or something. ? I surprisingly don’t mind the taste that much! - Make an immune boosting smoothie
I also like to make a giant smoothie with a bunch of kale, spinach, 2 oranges, banana, unsweetened almond milk, and some plant-based protein powder! Your body will love you for all those immune boosting foods! - Echinacea
Take the recommended dose of Echinacea in the morning after you eat breakfast. It’s best to take with food and it helps to fight off a cold faster. - Zinc
I also take the recommended dose of Zinc with food as well. This is another one that helps reduce the severity of a cold. I will also try to have some Airborne chewable tablets as well if I’m feeling like I need it. - Take a hot bath or shower
The steam from a hot bath or shower really clears up your sinuses and just feels so good on a tired body! - Get some extra ZzZ’s
I need 8 hours of sleep on a normal night but when I’m feeling under the weather I try to get 10-12, haha! Seriously though, extra rest can do wonders with fighting off a cold. Your body truly does need the extra downtime. It just gives you an excuse to binge watch that Netflix show you’ve been wanting to but didn’t have time for! ?
What are your go-to remedies?! I’d LOVE to learn about more because we have a long Winter ahead of us! ? Let me know in the comments below!
Cheers!
